Australia's Great North Conference
Australia’s Great North spans a vast area of unsurpassed natural and cultural beauty, but is on the frontlines of the climate and biodiversity crises, with its very liveability under threat.
Instead of transitioning to the new forms of governance and economies needed in these times, our democracies appear to be unravelling, communities are being silenced, and mass industrialisation is planned for our precious landscapes in line with the latest iteration of the governments’ neverending quest to “develop the north”.
In times of ecological, social and geopolitical peril, what new and unlikely forms of alliance, collaboration and relationship are needed for northern Australia to thrive? And what failed models and practices do we need to jettison?
This landmark conference will bring together campaigners, researchers, land managers, peak bodies, Traditional Owners, artists, and community members from across the north committed to a future where northern Australia’s communities, nature and climate can flourish in symbiosis.
Johnson Legal Director, Elaine Johnson, will be speaking at the Conference.
The Australia's Great North Conference will be held on 18 and 19 September 2025 in Darwin, Garramilla, hosted by the four peak conservation organisations spanning northern Australia.
