Friends of Australian Rock Art v Woodside and WA Environment Minister

(Filed 2025, WASC, ongoing)

ABC News: Lauren Smith

Judicial review filed in the Supreme Court of Western Australia challenging the Minister’s approval of Woodside’s proposal to extend the operation of the North West Shelf gas project for 45 years, to 2070. It is estimated that the project, if implemented, will generate greenhouse gas emissions over its lifetime at a scale that is equivalent to a decade of Australia’s own domestic emissions. The project is also located in amongst the ancient Murujuga rock art on the Burrup Peninsula causing irreversible harm to the world-heritage listed site over many generations through its direct industrial emissions impacts.

Johnson Legal is acting for charity Friends of Australian Rock Art (FARA). FARA is arguing that the WA Minister failed to consider the climate impacts when approving the North West Shelf extension.

This case is being run by Principal Lawyer Matt Floro, together with Senior Associate Asha Keaney, of Johnson Legal representing FARA.
